Bathymetric surveys are traditionally conducted from the surface, measuring depth (soundings) at measured positions along transect lines and then plotting the data on a bathymetric chart, on which lines of constant depth (isobates) can be drawn by sounding interpolation. It is also conventional to provide a representative set of point depths on the chart.
